The third largest county in New York State with a population of only 5,000, the county has no public transportation, no pharmacy, no hospital, no nursing home.
The county has the highest unemployment rate in the state; averaging at about the 1930's depression level for the overall U.S. Most jobs in the county are seasonal
and provide no benefits.
As a church body, we are concerned about these issues of the community and offer the following outreach:
- Almost 2/3 of our annual budget is used to help the surrounding community
- We contribute substantially to the Community Action Agency of Hamilton County on an annual basis.
- We maintain an outreach fund to use for special assistance when needs arise due to fire, illness or other emergency.
- Annually we provide college scholarships of $1000 for up to eight graduates of the Long Lake and Indian Lake schools, based on citizenship and need.
- The Russell Barrowman scholarship of $1000 is available for a technical student from Indian Lake School.
- We collect donated paper products, laundry supplies and toilet articles at the church for distribution through the Community Action Agency. (items not covered by
food stamps)
